Last night I was awaken by my windows shaking by the wind. I
took my ear plugs out and laid in bed as a flash flood/major tropical storm/tornado”ish”
storm went through Matugga. The lighting bolts were striking right above the
guest house and each thunder literally shook the house and my bed. I don’t
think I’ve ever been in a storm like that. Then, it made me think…about 600
yards away lays a family in a dung hut, probably laying in water as the storm
rolls. The thought made me sick to my stomach. I wanted to go bring all the
neighbors of Matugga to the guest house and give them shelter. The babies I see
everyday when I run, the little kids who scream “Mzungu”, the sweet lame boy
named Cornelius, the parents of each
hut, and the sweet older grandparents…all soaked with water. I’ve never been so
thankful and so guilty for having shelter! Can you imagine? This is normal
life: riding in the pouring rain on the back of a motorcycle to work, your
house and business flooding…consistently, wet clothes, wet beds, and no hot
water to warm you up as you shower with cold, ground, dirty water. And yet
today, they’ll choose joy. They will smile and wave at me as I jog past. The
kids will be running around, laughing and playing. They won’t complain…of this
I’m sure. Oh Jesus, give mercy on Africa
and have mercy on us who have so much and take it for granted!!!
